Review: Legends and Lattes

2023-01-01

The last few books I've read have been a bit more serious in tone or ponderous; The Black Company, WWZ, Gormenghast (still working on this one). Minus Discworld, I can't say I've read any lighthearted fantasy books, let alone a slice-of-life one. Legends and Lattes was recommended quite a bit online, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

To summarize the plot quickly (and spoiler free), it's the story of an orc who opens a coffee shop. There's some challenges, ups and downs, and a couple fun twists, of course, but the story is fairly straight forward (to its benefit, I think). I'm not sure the fantasy setting is strictly necessary for it to work, but adds flavour I enjoyed. It's a very wholesome book, and it's hard not to be happy for the protagonists and cheer them on when things go well.

Not a very descriptive review, but pretty reflective of my experience; I read the book and it was adorable.
